What to Expect During Your First Week at CDL School

What to Expect During Your First Week at CDL School

Walking into CDL school for the first time can feel a lot like a first day at any new job — a mix of excitement, nerves, and a hundred questions you forgot to ask. At National Standard Trucking School in Tacoma, we've seen that nervous energy turn into genuine confidence by Friday of the first week. Here's what those first few days actually look like.

Day One: Orientation and Classroom Fundamentals

Your first day begins with orientation — meeting your instructors, getting familiar with the campus at 7402 Pacific Hwy E, and understanding the program schedule. Then it's straight into classroom instruction covering CDL regulations, vehicle classifications, and the basics of commercial driving. You'll learn about pre-trip inspections, air brake systems, and the federal regulations that govern every mile you'll drive. It's a lot of information, but our small class sizes mean you can ask questions freely.

Days Two and Three: Getting Into the Truck

By your second day, you'll be outside looking at actual trucks. You'll practice a full pre-trip inspection — learning to check tires, lights, coupling devices, brakes, and fluid levels. Then comes the moment everyone remembers: climbing into the driver's seat for the first time. With our 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio, your instructor is right there coaching you through basic controls, clutch engagement (for manual transmission students), and low-speed maneuvers in our practice yard.

Days Four and Five: Building Confidence

By the end of the week, most students are executing basic straight-line backing, right turns, and left turns with growing confidence. You'll start to develop a feel for the size and weight of the truck. The steering becomes more intuitive. The mirrors start making sense. It's nowhere near perfect — nobody expects it to be — but the transformation from Monday to Friday is something our instructors see with every class and it never gets old.

What to Bring and How to Prepare

Wear closed-toe boots and comfortable clothing you can move in. Bring a notebook, a water bottle, and a willingness to learn. You don't need any prior trucking experience — that's literally what we're here for. Our Class A program runs 160 hours over four weeks, and our Class B program is 80 hours over three weeks. By graduation, you'll be test-ready and career-ready. Call (253) 210-0505 to reserve your spot in the next class.
